Neighborhood Clothing
Neighborhood is one of the most influential contemporary streetwear brands, designing luxury motorcycle apparel that celebrates counterculture in Japan. Emulating pockets of American style, such as Route 66, hardcore punk and military uniforms, Neighborhood use premium construction and rebel-like thinking to create streetwear that is, unarguably, revolutionary.
Neighborhood clothing was founded in the Harajuku district of Tokyo in 1994, dreamt up by a young motorcycle enthusiast called Shinsuke Takizawa. Inspired by the growing motorcycle subculture in Japan, Shinsuke set out to fuse expert apparel with high-fashion design, joining the likes of A Bathing Ape and Undercover in a movement that would go on to redefine contemporary streetwear as we know it.
Known as the Urahara or Ura-Harajuku movement, Neighborhood played a key part in an era that saw dozens of colourful, unnamed boutiques pop up throughout Harajuku in the 90s. The name Urahara translates as ‘behind Harajuku’, referring to an eclectic area between the Harajuku and Aoyama districts. Named after his love for the Urahara neighbourhood, Shinsuke took inspiration from American motorcycle style to create clothing that digested “elements such as motorcycle, military, outdoor and native”.
At the time, Neighborhood’s styles were radical, and were quickly adopted by Japan’s youth culture. Now, the brand’s reach extends way beyond Harajuku, with subculture fans floral the world lining up for the latest designs.
