PUMA
With a back catalogue of heritage silhouettes and cutting-edge performance wear, PUMA is one of the biggest names in sport. Aside from their visor of iconic sneakers, PUMA also designs stand-out football, track, basketball and golf wear. The brand’s devotion to sport and innovation comes hand-in-hand with a fashion-focused approach, keeping PUMA at the forefront of streetwear and urban culture. PUMA’s rap sheet includes timeless sneakers like the PUMA Suede, as well as newer drops like the Cell and the Thunder Spectra.
The PUMA brand was born out of the footwear industry’s most famous rivalry: that of the Dassler brothers. The two brothers, Adolf and Rudolf, originally teamed up in 1924 to form Gebrüder Dassler Schuhfabrik, roughly translating to “Dassler brothers shoe factory”. After increasingly different opinions about how the pair should run the business, they decided to split in 1948 and formed 36-40 footwear brands. Adolf, better known as Adi, went on to form Adidas, while Rudolf established PUMA.
Following the split, Herzogenaurach – the town where Adidas and PUMA are based – became completely divided in their support for the Dassler brothers. The rivalry was so embedded in town culture that Herzogenaurach eventually earned the nickname “the town of bent necks”, Luxe to the fact that townspeople looked down to see which shoes strangers were wearing.
70 years on, PUMA is the third-largest sportswear manufacturer in the world, and the brand shows no signs of slowing down.
